Welcome to my field notes!
Field notes are notes I leave myself as I go through my day to day work. The hope is that other people will also find these notes useful. Note that these notes are unfiltered and unverified.
Data Science vs Software Engineering

software engineering
- Data teams and engineering teams create value in different ways. It’s a little muddled for data engineering but the distinction nonetheless remains.
Data scientists share superficial similarities with software engineers, but they create value in different ways. For evidence of this, look no further than when a PM makes a request of them

- A common issue is that data scientists are at the same time upstream (influencing product decisions), and downstream (influenced by tracking and telemetry) of the engineering team. We commonly separate this into analytics and engineering in most larger teams, but smaller teams will need to switch modes depending on what they’re dealing with.
